About Weight Loss Treatment

There are several prescription weight loss treatments available, either in a tablet or injectable pen, depending on what you prefer and what is suitable for you. These must be taken in combination with healthy lifestyle changes to help you achieve your weight loss goals.

Weight loss treatment is only effective if you also follow a healthy diet and increase your physical activity. People respond to medication differently, so there is no set time for when you can expect to see results. Ask your health care professional about what might be a realistic expectation for you.

Weight loss injections

Weight loss injections are prescription treatments that can help you lose weight. We currently provide Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Nevolat, which are injectable pre-filled pens.

Mounjaro

Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection containing the active ingredient tirzepatide. Similar to Wegovy, it helps you lose weight by reducing hunger and prolonging satiety (feeling full after eating). It does this by mimicking 2 hormones in your body that are usually released after eating, which have the same effects.

Wegovy

Wegovy is a weight loss injection that is taken once a week, containing semaglutide. It works by mimicking a hormone that targets areas of the brain that regulate appetite. It makes you feel more full from less food to help you lose weight – an average of 21%** of your starting body weight is lost on average when using the highest maintenance dose.

Nevolat (liraglutide)

Nevolat is an injectable weight loss pen that contains the same active ingredient as Saxenda, liraglutide. It is taken once a day and gets to work within 1 to 2 days. You should start to notice the weight loss effects within the first few weeks of using it.

Nevolat can help you lose, on average, 8% of your starting body weight after 56 weeks of using the highest maintenance dose of 3mg per day.

Saxenda*

Saxenda is an injectable weight loss pen that contains the active ingredient liraglutide. It works by making you feel less hungry. This helps you to eat less and lose weight.

Saxenda is taken once a day, and it should start working within 1 to 2 days. You can expect to see results within a few weeks of taking it.

*Please note due to nationwide shortages, we do not offer Saxenda.

Weight loss tablets

Weight loss tablets or capsules are a suitable alternative if you do not feel comfortable taking injections. Superdrug Online Doctor currently offers 4 tablets.

Orlistat/Xenical

Orlistat is a generic weight loss capsule that changes how your body digests fat, meaning you do not absorb some of the fat from your meals.

Xenical  is a branded version of orlistat. This means it works the same way to change how your body digests fat. They work best when you eat low-fat meals and spread your daily fat intake over 3 meals.

Orlistat and Xenical can be taken up to 3 times a day and only with meals that contain fat. When you start taking them, it should take around 24 to 48 hours to work. You should see weight loss results within 2 weeks of taking it. If it's right for you, you can expect at least 5% weight loss by 12 weeks.

Mysimba

Mysimba is a weight loss tablet that makes you feel less hungry. It contains 2 active ingredients called naltrexone and bupropion. These work to help you control your food intake, as they can stop food cravings and make you feel fuller.

When you take Mysimba, you will start on a lower dose that will be increased gradually. Mysimba should start to work within 1 to 2 days of taking it, but it will take a few weeks to reach its full effect. An average of 8.1% weight loss was reported in clinical trials after 56 weeks of treatment.

alli

alli weight loss capsules are an over-the-counter weight loss medication that has been proven to help you lose weight when used in combination with a healthy diet and an active lifestyle. They work by stopping your body from absorbing around 25% of the fat in your food. They contain orlistat, but at half the dose of the prescription treatments orlistat and Xenical.

You should take 1 alli capsule within an hour of eating a meal that contains fat up to 3 times a day. If you do not eat a meal that contains fat, you do not need to take the capsule. Around 50% of people lose at least 5% of their starting weight within 6 months.

You should not take alli for longer than 6 months – if you still want to lose weight, speak to your doctor.
